Caught in the rain

I’m down with the cold at the moment. And the way I see it? Is that it’s a bad thing and a good thing. A bad thing because I hate being sick and being unable to breathe through my nose which then keeps me up all night. But it’s a good thing because I’m bound to get sick in winter time and now that it’s in progress and soon to be over with, I know I won’t be sick when we get married! I can tell you that the way I’m feeling now? Is not how I want to feel the day of my wedding.

I suppose it is my fault I’m sick now. Last week I felt a hint of a cold coming on… Started with a scratchy throat, a little tickle, some sneezing going on… But nothing ever really eventuated. I was fine.

Then yesterday, it’d been raining in the early hours of the morning and when it came time to leave for work I checked the radar on my phone and there were no signs of rain over and around Melbourne. When I stepped out of my house, there were even blue skies. I should’ve known. I know Melbourne like the back of my hand – I should’ve known! I didn’t take an umbrella with me and half way through my walk to the train station, it poured. Like poured! Not even drizzled. Needless to say I was saturated and cold.

And it only got worse throughout the day… I started feeling awful and I ended up leaving work a little early just so I could get home to rest. Also, I hate being at the office sick – it’s crazy how quickly germs are passed around and before you know it half the team is down with a cold or unwell in some way, shape or form. And that’s what’s happened I think. There have been a few people at work away sick lately.

Okay I just posted an entire post about being sick. That’s my sick rant for the year! Have a great, healthy week!

Comedy night

Just one agonising day till the long weekend gets here! It really isn’t all that agonising… I’m just making things more painful than it has to be because I’ve been in such a ‘can’t be bothered’ mood this week! I’m completely hanging out for Easter long weekend… Not that we have anything super exciting planned but a break away from the office would be good after the last few weeks that we’ve had.

So, if you’re in Melbourne and you don’t already know – in which case, shame on you! – the Melbourne comedy festival is currently underway. I love it! What better way to spend a night than to have a few good laughs with friends. That’s exactly what we did tonight… We headed to a comedy show featuring a few American comedians. One of them wasn’t all that great but the remaining two comedians were hilarious. My face got a nice work out :) And now it’s past midnight and I’ve just got home… So ready for bed and some shut eye.

Since I’m already posting, I might post a quick update on the wedding front – my hen’s invites were sent out today! I’m so, so excited but also very nervous! My bridesmaids have planned every single minute of my hen’s day/night… Two things I’m sure of is that it’s going to be FUN and that I really have no idea what to expect and what they’ve planned! A little scary if you ask me… But I’m so up for it! My lovely sister also designed my hen’s invites and she did an amazing job once again. I’ve already had such lovely comments about my wedding invites and she’s done a superb job with my hen’s. Count down to my hen’s party is on!

A balloon sunrise

So, what else did we get upto this weekend? We went hot air ballooning! Another to-do crossed off my bucket list :)

If you remember, I actually bought this balloon ride for Marc when he turned a year older last November. So it was his birthday present! Coincidentally, the balloon ride yesterday fell on the anniversary of our engagement! Yes, we have been engaged for a year now!

A year ago, the boy proposed in Bali which also meant that we finished our 2-month travel adventure and were on our way home. Sob!

So back to the hot air ballooning… It was an incredible experience! I’ll be honest and say that I probably won’t do it again only because of how much it costs (an arm and a leg) but I guess I’ve learned to never say never! Maybe if we were to do it in a completely different landscape like over mountains and lakes – something different – then yes, it’s a possibility that I may do it again!

I chose the balloon flight over Melbourne’s city because I’ve heard many say that it’s a lot more beautiful. Our other option was to fly over the Yarra Valley which I’m sure would’ve been amazing too.

The evening before our flight we had to call our pilot to find out if the flight was still going ahead as it is completely dependent on the weather. Lucky for us it was going ahead but because they were predicting stronger winds than usual, we had to do another weather check at 3.30am yesterday (the morning we were due to fly). This meant an extremely early start for us… We did the weather check at 3.30am and it was still scheduled to go ahead so we pretty much got ourselves ready to head to the meeting point. We were supposed to meet our pilot at 4.45am.

As soon as we got to the meeting point, we registered ourselves and then we were out of there and started making our way to our ‘take-off’ site which was north of Melbourne. The take off site really differs each time depending on which direction the wind blows.

Once we got to the site, they then attach a tiny blinking light to a helium balloon and release the balloon to pretty much determine the wind direction one last time so that we’re sure that we can take off from there. It also helps the pilot pre-determine where we might land later in the morning.

The good (or bad, depending on how you look at it!) thing about this experience is that it’s pretty much a full, hands on experience in that we got to help set up the balloon before we took off. It’s not hard but it’s not easy either. It requires getting a little down and dirty on the grass. You don’t have to help but I reckon it’s always more fun when you join in and participate. Plus you don’t exactly want to look like a bad team player!

Once we hopped into the basket which are just like giant wicker picnic baskets (that’s how I like to describe them!), we were off! I was a little anxious at the start… I mean, come on, we’re in an open air basket, rising to more than a thousand feet above ground… That can be pretty scary! But within minutes I started to feel at ease and just could not believe the sight in front of me. From all the other balloons (another 4 or 5 balloons were also there) taking off at the same time, to the beautiful soft glow of the sky from the sun slowly waking… To the little street lights that seemed to twinkle as we rose higher and higher… To the amazing sense of peace that overcame me as we glided across the sky… It was just all wonderfully breathtaking.

We spent a lot of the time in almost complete silence because you just don’t want to wreck that sense of serenity… But we also spent a lot of time guessing which freeways we were flying over, or which suburbs we were looking down at, admiring the swimming pools from above and taking in the sight of our beautiful city from afar and the buildings we’re so very familiar with that yet seemed so different from our basket so high above.

I do have to say though that the one thing I was disappointed with was that we were not able to fly as close as I’d hope we could’ve to the city… The pilot did mention that the wind direction that morning wasn’t ideal for hovering directly over the city as it could’ve easily taken us out to the bay so we had to stick to viewing our beautiful city from afar. Which was disappointing but so out of our control so I’m okay with that!

I think we were in the air for about 90 minutes when it came time for us to land… I was also a little nervous about the landing as I have a horrible imagination and I kept thinking that the entire basket would just tip over. But of course that didn’t happen… We had a pretty smooth landing and I have to admit I was glad to have both feet on solid ground.

After landing we also had the chance to participate in packing the balloon which isn’t all that easy! You’d be surprised just how huge a hot air balloon is on the ground. It looks teeny weeny up in the air but I assure you it’s ginormous in real size!

So that was our hot air ballooning experience! I’m glad Marc had a great time which is really all that matters as this was his birthday gift. A special man deserves a special gift! If you’re considering hot air ballooning and it’s on your bucket list – do it! It’s worth the money and the early start :)

A few tips when you do go ballooning:
- Wear a hat. This is a must! The gas/fire that the pilot operates above your head in the balloon to release hot air into the balloon? It’s super and I mean super hot! I didn’t wear a hat and I was in the edge of the basket (not directly under the fire) and I felt like my hair follicles were being burnt off.
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes (i.e strictly no heels or skirts). Firstly you’ll be walking on grass before take off and after landing. Secondly you don’t want to even try climbing into the basket with a skirt on. And you also may get down and dirty with the setting up and packing of the balloon.

Weekend @ Lorne

Where has the last few weeks been? I honestly have no idea, but somewhere in the midst of it all, Marc and I decided to just pack a couple of bags, lock up the house and took a long weekend away from the city. We headed down the surf coast to Lorne. We rented a beach house and this was our view from our top level bedroom…. amazing, no?

It was spectacular. The house was amazing. It was probably a tad big for just us two, but we didnt’ care… a house, seconds from the beach, open fire, amazing views… you won’t hear us complaining!

It really was just what we needed… time away from the busyness of everything… because it decided to pretty much rain the entire weekend, we spent alot of time by the fire, roasting marshmallows and watching movies…

We did hit the town a couple of times, explored the little shops, walks on the beach, lots of coffee at coffee shops, even took a mini hike in 8 degree weather down to a waterfall… total bliss of a weekend. We need to do this more often!

I took a ton of other photos but for whatever reason it’s taking forever for me to upload them… so I’ll post the rest of them next time!

I’m off to enjoy the rest of my Friday night, i.e. catch up on episodes of Kendra and Kimora… and another beautiful weekend starts tomorrow… oh, and some exciting news to share before I go? We have booked all our internal flights within the US for our big trip at the end of the year. It’s a triple YAY with whipped cream, hot chocolate fudge and a cherry on top for me! Only 153 days to go…

Missing the beach

We have been having some fantastic weather here in Melbourne lately! It actually feels like summer is still here… just trying to linger around for a little bit longer… oh, bless you summer. Sadly, Marc and I did not manage to hit the beaches this summer… I suppose we didn’t have the hottest summer and Marc worked most Saturdays, so we spent alot of out time around Melbourne. Nevertheless, I’ve glad summer is sticking around… not really looking forward to getting out of my warm bed to a freezing cold house in the early mornings. Oh, floorboards don’t help. But I hate carpet. So, what do you do.

Life is always good, but off late? It has been better, it has been sweet. Marc and I are just happy pottering around on the weekends doing whatever we usually do. Catching up with friends, with family. It’s been wonderful. I’ve been feeling less stressed from work and it’s doing wonders to my moods at home… Marc on the other hand, is a little stressed out with his business, but is doing so well. He’s been working super hard and has pretty much worked every Saturday since Christmas! He’s a hard worker and I love every ounce of him for it…

The other thing we cannot stop thinking about is of course our travel plans for the end of the year! This is what I’m currently reading…

Yep, I can’t just read one book at a time. I need to have variety. Can you guess which one takes up most of my reading time though? My mind is going crazy just thinking of everything we plan on doing and seeing! Oh so much to do… so much to see… where to start… if you remember well, though I enjoyed the process of planning our NZ itinerary, it also was painful trying to decide on which accommodation we wanted to settle with. I just cannot imagine doing it for seven different cities. Good news is, we’ve booked our NYC accommodation. Oh, my heart, my heart! At least we know where we’ll be over Christmas and New Year’s. The planning continues…

Friday tomorrow! Then another long weekend… I am loving these short weeks… certainly getting too used to them.

Night at the footy

Last weekend, Marc and I went into the city to watch a football game with a couple of friends. There is something magical about Melbourne city at dusk… everything seems more beautiful. Even though we live only ten or fifteen minutes from the city itself, we never really travel into the CBD unless we’re heading out to a bar, a football game, or a dinner in Chinatown. I did use to work in the CBD a couple of years ago and now, each time I am in the city, it reminds me of how much I used to love working there and being around the tall buildings and the bustling atmosphere. Note to self, need to find another city job? Maybe. Though I don’t always like to admit it, because I do enjoy time in the bush and by the coast, I may, just may be a city girl at heart. Wait till I get to Manhattan. Oh boy.

One of my favourite parts of an AFL game is right at the start, when each team puts their banner up. I love to see what the club come up with. Sometimes they have funny competitive banter, sometimes it’s just the usual “100 games” spiel. But it’s still my favourite part. Except for when we win. Unfortunately, last Saturday wasn’t our night to win. COME. ON. BLUES. Being at the footy makes for a great night…

Have a fantastic weekend!
